The Foreign Activities of the European Union
LINHART, Tomáš
The bachelor's thesis entitled "Foreign Activities of the European Union" deals with processes and internal affairs and their subsequent impact on setting priorities in concluding bilateral and multilateral agreements on the international level. The work defines the integration development, starting with the Coal and Steel Treaty, the Treaties of Rome, the Schengen Agreement, the Single European Act, the creation of the European Union, the Maastricht Treaty, the Treaty of Amsterdam and the Reform Treaty of Lisbon. The thesis defines necessary key institutions of the Union and determines the coordinated activities that independent institutions have towards non-member countries or international organizations, or fundamentally participate in the future direction of the European Union's international activities. The bachelor's thesis presents the procedures of foreign trade negotiations, then the development and activities of the Common Foreign and Defence Policy of the European Union and the European External Action Service and the publication of foreign instruments of the EU. The aim of the bachelor's thesis was to find out and determine which politics and internal affairs of third countries are primarily influenced by the foreign activities of the European Union. On the basis of bilateral and multilateral agreements concluded between or among the European Union and other states or international groupings, the work defines examples in practice where changes in internal affairs are visible in certain areas, such as changes in the legislative framework, which were the result of the subject enforced by European Union. The bachelor thesis specifically assesses taxes, transport, energy, economic affairs, humanitarian aid and civil protection, human rights, regional affairs, justice and home affairs, space affairs, education and culture, employment and social affairs, environment and climate change, and lastly agriculture and food safety. The influence of the European Union on individual sub-activities of non-member states is defined into three groups. Most affected, average affected and least affected.
Problems of Balkan Candidate Countries that are slowing their integration into the EU
Zelenková, Gabriela ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Hofmeisterová, Karin (referee)
The European Union's leading policies undoubtedly include integration policy. Since its inception, the European Union has grown several times and is now being counted With the accession of other states. It is the candidate countries of the Western Balkans that will be crucial for my analysis. In our work we will focus on discovering and analyzing the main obstacles of these countries, which are responsible for the slowing of the integration process. The problems faced by these states on their way to the European Union are numerous. Since they are states of one region, many problems are common, but despite the fact that the European Union does not form themselves as a single entity and the admission of one of the states to the European Union, that is to say the acceptance of other states as well. Although they have many problem points in common, each country has its own specific problems that slow down this integration process.

In the first part, the readers are acquainted with the theoretical basis and challenges of acquisition procedures, focusing on the integration of the newly acquired companies. The second part is dedicated to STERIS Corporation, which serves as an example for theoretical knowledge application. In this part, the author describes the company's growth strategy, using analysis of financial indicators and series of preceding and subsequent takeovers. In the closing part, the thesis is enriched with a personal research in the form of a questionnaire, inclusive of STERIS Corporation's international managers' responses.
A theoretical and empirical analysis of the nominal convergence in transition countries with a particular attention to the Czech economy
Žďárek, Václav ; Komárek, Luboš (advisor) ; Dědek, Oldřich (referee) ; Feldkircher, Martin (referee)
This PhD thesis aims at exploring price convergence in the European Union with a particular emphasis paid to the Czech Republic and new EU member states. Fundamental issues are discussed in the first chapter, starting with the notion and term `convergence' since many alternative definitions have been proposed in the literature. Apart from that, main indicators utilized when investigating price convergence are defined (for example purchasing power parity/purchasing power standard, PPP/PPS, comparative price level, CPL) and a brief review of the literature is added. The second chapter deals with several issues accompanying price convergence in general and in transforming countries in particular such as the club convergence hypothesis, issues of tradability, availability of datasets and their strenghts and weaknesses, the link between price levels and rates of inflation, and determinants. Both `standard' and `modern' approaches are utilized in the last chapter so that several hypotheses can be verified. For the sake of comparability, individual CPLs for EU-27 countries for the period 1995(9)-2011 are employed. Firstly, stylised facts for both old EU and NMS are presented (including effects stemming from the on-going financial crisis). Secondly, the club convergence hypothesis is examined with help of two different ways - cluster analysis and the Phillips-Sul test (both for the EU and its `subgroups'). Both of them do confirm the existence of convergence clubs in the EU (including its old and new part). Following the previous findings, a somewhat broader and richer view on price level dynamics is supplemented via utilization of the so-called Stochastic kernel (Quah, 1993). This methodology shows both convergence and divergence (divergence/polarization/stratification) in the EU. Finally, the last section of this chapter is focused on a thorough search for determinants of price levels in the EU. The Bayesian approach is employed (Bayesian model averaging, BMA) and our results confirm both the importance of both `traditional' determinants such as labour costs and output gap and new ones such as broadly defined institutional factors. Main findings of this thesis are summarized and commented in the conclusion aiming at providing implications for policymakers and some guidance for future research.
